Kanchanjangha Tea Estate and Research Centre (KTERC) was established in 1984 by Mr. Deepak Prakash Bansktota to improve the economic status of his local community. Located at the foothills of Mt. Kanchanjangha, it is Nepal’s first organic-certified tea garden. The estate is a social enterprise that empowers farmers through a cooperative model, providing them with ownership and benefits such as free housing, education, and subsidies on food supplies. It also supports women’s empowerment and sustainable agriculture practices.

Production Process

The production of our organic hibiscus begins with the careful harvesting of vibrant hibiscus flowers from our certified organic farms. These flowers are typically plucked by hand to ensure only the highest quality blooms are selected for processing. 

Once harvested, the flowers undergo a drying and withering process that removes excess moisture and concentrates the natural flavors and compounds within the petals. After drying, the hibiscus flowers are cut or shredded into smaller pieces to increase the surface area. This allows for more efficient extraction of the desired compounds during brewing. 

Depending on the desired characteristics of the final tea, the hibiscus leaves may undergo a controlled oxidation process to develop further the unique tart and tangy flavors associated with hibiscus tea. Finally, the dried and processed hibiscus is carefully packaged to preserve the freshness and quality of the tea, ensuring that our consumers can enjoy the vibrant color and refreshing taste.
